Drug Testing
The Federal Government has mandated a drug-free workplace for their employees and contractors. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has regulated this drug testing program since the enactment of the program. That being said, non-DOT drug testing of new hires and employees has been shown to be an effective way to improve workplace safety, promote retention, and save money. Companies with drug testing programs for pre-employment and random drug testing have benefited in decreased levels of absenteeism, lower health care costs, and higher work productivity.
Drug testing your employees for illegal substance abuse and prescription medications can be accomplished either through the DOT or a non-DOT program. The substances of abuse that are usually checked in a drug test are Amphetamines, Cocaine, Marijuana, Opiates, and Phencyclidine. However, some companies will expand their drug screen program to include other substances of abuse that are common in their community. All DOT drug tests must be sent to a Medical Review Officer (MRO) who has is specially trained and certified to review DOT drug tests. For medicolegal reason, it is advisable to utilize an MRO to also review non-DOT drug tests.
There are five common ways to test for drugs or alcohol in a person’s system. They are Urine Drug Test (most common), Hair Test, Blood Test, Saliva Test, and a Breath Alcohol Test (breathalyzer test). That being said, blood tests are rarely used to check for substance abuse but it is an option. DOT drug tests programs currently only use urine as the test medium.
